Chapter Twenty-Two

I ran up our porch stairs as soon as I got home from work the next day. While I’d been at Ari’s Cakes, I got an email saying my microphone had been delivered. There were a couple of packages by our front door, and one of them had my name on it. It was here! The last time I had been this excited about a piece of mail, I was secretly writing to Marcus.

I brought the box up to my room and ripped it open with a pair of scissors. The microphone wasn’t fancy, but it was one of the recommended ones that I could afford with my Ari’s Cakes money. The last couple of nights, I’d listened to a bunch of podcast episodes from different shows, to get a sense of what style I wanted mine to have. I’d also watched a ton of YouTube tutorials and read articles about how to record and edit a podcast.

I was ready.

All I needed now were people to interview. But I already had my first guest scheduled. During our lunch break today, Marcus had texted one of his Innocence Project lawyers to ask if I could interview her. She agreed, so Mom and I scheduled time to meet with her on a video call on Thursday.

In the meantime, to get some practice in, I decided to record a short promo episode to upload. I plugged the microphone into my laptop right as I heard a knock on my door.

It was Trevor.

“Oh hey. You’re just in time.”

“Hey.” He came in and sat on my bed. “Sorry, I had to shower when I got back from camp.”

“Please don’t apologize for not showing up smelly.” I laughed.

He looked at the microphone connected to my laptop. “Have you recorded anything yet?”

“Not yet. I’m about to.”

“What’s your podcast going to be called, anyway?” Trevor asked.

“I don’t know yet,” I said. “I need to think of something soon. Do you have any ideas? I want it to sound official. Like if someone was browsing through podcasts on their phone, and started listening to mine, they’d be surprised to find out a fourteen-year-old is the host.”

Trevor nodded. “What’s the name of the show you were on with Marcus?”

“Boston Public Radio’s Interview Hour,” I said. “It’s kind of boring.”

“How about, ‘Zoe Washington’s Interview Hour’?”

“Then it sounds like I’m ripping them off. Though I kind of like the idea of my name being in the title.”

“Should the name also have something about how you’re interviewing people who went to prison?”

I shook my head. “Probably not. Because maybe I’ll want to talk about something else after I’m done with this series. Who knows? Maybe this’ll become my new calling—after baking, of course.”

Trevor picked up the microphone and spoke into it. “What about, ‘On the Mic . . .’” He gave a dramatic pause, and then said, “‘with Zoe Washington.’ I feel like fancy news shows always have ‘with so-and-so’ at the end.”

I nodded. “Yeah.” I wasn’t sure about “on the mic,” but I liked “with Zoe Washington.
